Writing a professional blog significantly enhances my language interpreting development as part of continuing professional development (CPD) by providing a platform for reflection, knowledge sharing, and skill refinement.
The blog allows me and other interpreters to analyse and document their experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of challenges and solutions in the field. Blogging also helps solidify complex concepts, such as cultural nuances and advanced linguistic strategies, through the process of articulating them clearly for an audience.
My practice as an interpreter has become more nuanced, as I can now consider cultural context and idiomatic expressions that add depth to communication. As a result of blogging, I am inspired to explore additional opportunities for growth. This cultural and linguistic journey has been transformative, equipping me with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to thrive in a multilingual and multicultural world.
Additionally, engaging with readers and receiving feedback promotes professional networking, exposing me and other interpreters to diverse perspectives and best practices. Ultimately, maintaining a blog not only demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning but also positions me as an engaged and proactive professional in the interpreting community.
As a consequence of writing a monthly blog about language interpreting, I’ve realised how much additional learning I can pursue to deepen my expertise. Researching for each blog post has opened my eyes to areas where I could expand my knowledge, such as exploring specific challenges in multilingual interpreting, delving deeper into cultural nuances that affect communication, or even studying niche areas like medical or legal interpreting.

Spanish Lessons
November 2024
Weekly, remote private Spanish lessons. Learning Spanish is an amazing journey for me, both personally and professionally. It’s about so much more than just words—it’s about connection, growth, and opportunity. My tutor is a Spaniard living and working in northern Spain.

Broadening My Perspective on Language As a BSL interpreter, I already think about language in a really dynamic way—how concepts translate across modalities (spoken vs. signed). Learning Spanish adds another layer, helping me understand how different languages structure ideas, express culture, and shape identity.
Personal Growth I’ve been learning Spanish for four years now, and it’s become so much more than just a skill—it’s a passion. The process of learning it has challenged me, helped me grow, and given me a new way to connect with the world.
Building Bridges in Multilingual Communities I want to be the person who can navigate multilingual spaces, where people speak Spanish and use BSL. It’s such a unique opportunity to help those communities connect. I’m not just an interpreter—I’m like a communication superhero!
Professional Opportunities Adding Spanish to my skill set makes me more versatile as an interpreter. I’m more able to bridge communication between Spanish-speaking Deaf communities and hearing people who use BSL. With Spanish being the second most spoken language in the world, I know it opens doors to work with Spanish-speaking clients in all kinds of multicultural settings. Connecting Cultures Deaf communities around the world have their own unique sign languages and cultures, and learning Spanish allows me to connect with not only Spanish speakers but also explore the world of Lengua de Señas Española (Spanish Sign Language). Those cultural layers—spoken and signed—make my understanding of communication so much richer.
Future Collaboration I’d love to work on interpreting projects in Spanish-speaking countries or collaborate on workshops for Deaf and hearing communities in the future. It’s a global world, and Spanish opens up so many exciting opportunities. Travel Goals! Spain and Latin America are full of incredible places and Deaf communities I’d love to explore. Knowing Spanish makes it easier to connect with locals, navigate everyday situations, and have deeper cultural experiences.

I chose to attend the Cervantes school in Málaga because I wanted to immerse myself fully in the Spanish language and culture. While remote private lessons gave me a strong foundation, I felt that being in a classroom environment, surrounded by other learners and native speakers, would push me to the next level. Málaga, with its rich history, beautiful setting, and vibrant Spanish lifestyle, felt like the perfect place to blend formal study with real-world practice. I also wanted to connect with other students and experience firsthand how language is lived, not just learned.
At Cervantes, I learned much more than just grammar and vocabulary. I gained confidence in speaking Spanish in real-time conversations, especially through group activities and interactive exercises. I improved my listening skills by engaging with different accents and speaking styles, both from teachers and classmates. The cultural aspects we discussed in class—like idiomatic expressions, regional differences, and Spanish customs—helped me understand how to use the language naturally and respectfully in various contexts. Most importantly, I learned how to step out of my comfort zone and embrace making mistakes as part of the learning process.
I plan to apply what I’ve learned by actively using Spanish in both my professional and personal life. In my interpreting work, having a better understanding of how we use language will allow me to communicate more effectively with clients and bridge language gaps in multilingual environments. Socially, I want to keep practicing with native speakers, whether through travel, local language meetups, or online communities. I also plan to incorporate more Spanish media into my daily life, like podcasts, books, and TV shows, to keep building on the progress I’ve made.
This experience has made a huge difference in my interpreting practice. I’ve become more aware of how to adapt my communication style when working across languages and cultures. The classroom environment taught me to think more quickly and intuitively in Spanish, which is crucial for interpreting. It also reinforced the importance of cultural context in communication, something that applies to both spoken and signed languages. Overall, I feel more confident and capable as a multilingual professional, and I’m excited to continue developing these skills.
As a result of this experience, I’m inspired to keep learning and expanding my skills. I’d love to explore Lengua de Señas Española (Spanish Sign Language) to connect more deeply with Spanish-speaking Deaf communities. I’m also considering taking a conversational Spanish course or joining advanced workshops to keep building fluency. Long-term, I’d like to spend more time in other Spanish-speaking countries, experiencing their unique cultures and dialects. The learning never stops, and this experience in Málaga has given me the motivation to keep growing.

I am embarking on this cultural and linguistic journey because I recognise the importance of achieving fluency in Spanish to expand both my personal and professional horizons. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, and mastering it allows me to connect with a vast global community. Moreover, my passion for exploring different cultures and my goal to integrate language learning with real-life experiences made this project an ideal endeavour. The immersive program at Cervantes Escuela Internacional in Málaga offered the perfect combination of rigorous language instruction and deep cultural exposure, enabling me to learn Spanish in an authentic and meaningful context.
Through this project, I will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Spanish language, progressing through the CEFR levels from A1 to C2. I will learn to communicate effectively in diverse situations—from basic conversations to advanced discussions on complex topics. Beyond language proficiency, I will develop a profound appreciation for Spanish culture, including its traditions, history, and contemporary society. My experiences in Málaga enriched my understanding of how language and culture are intertwined, highlighting the nuances of communication shaped by cultural contexts. Additionally, the plan enhanced my adaptability, critical thinking, and intercultural competence.
I plan to apply my Spanish proficiency in both personal and professional settings. Professionally, I will use my language skills to work as a BSL interpreter, facilitating communication between Deaf English and Spanish speakers. The cultural insights I plan to gain will enable me to navigate cross-cultural interactions with sensitivity and understanding. Personally, I intend to continue engaging with the Spanish-speaking/signing community through travel, cultural events, and literary exploration. This will not only keep my skills sharp but also deepen my connections with people from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, I aim to mentor others pursuing similar linguistic and cultural goals.
This plan will transform the way I approach language learning and cultural engagement. It has instilled a greater sense of confidence in my ability to communicate and connect across cultural boundaries. My practice as an interpreter has become more nuanced, as I can now consider cultural context and idiomatic expressions that add depth to communication. The immersive experiences have also broadened my perspective, making me more empathetic and effective in cross-cultural settings. Overall, the learning has elevated my professional capabilities and enriched my personal growth.
As a result of this journey, I am inspired to explore additional opportunities for growth. I plan to delve deeper into Spanish literature and film to enhance my understanding of the cultural nuances embedded in the language. I am also interested in studying other Spanish-speaking regions, such as Latin America, to broaden my cultural perspective and gain insights into the linguistic variations across the Spanish-speaking world.
