There are lots of prepositions and they are among some of the most commonly used words in English. There are different kinds of prepositions (which we’ll learn about below) and it is possible for a word to be more than one kind of preposition depending on the context in which it is used.
Prepositions of place
Prepositions of place describe where something is. They include words like;
- in
- out
- on
- off
- above
- under
- beside
- below
For example:
- The cat is hiding under the bed -> ‘Under’ is the preposition that shows the relationship between ‘hiding’ and ‘bed’.
Prepositions of direction
Prepositions of direction describe where something is going or where to put something. They include words like:
- to
- on
- for
- into
For example:
- She is going to school -> ‘To’ is the preposition that shows the relationship between ‘going’ and ‘school’.
- Put the pencil in your pocket -> ‘In’ is preposition that shows the relationship between ‘pencil’ and ‘pocket’.
Prepositions of time
Prepositions of time describe when something is happening. They include words like:
- in
- at
- on
- after
- before
- from
- until
- during
For example:
- I am going to work at 10am -> ‘At’ is the preposition that shows the relationship between ‘going’ and ‘10am’.
